Tyland Barn
Tyland Barn is the home of Kent Trust for nature conservation.
The trust purchased an old farm yard which consisted
of a barn, outbuildings and surrounding fields.
Our directly employed craftsmen completely refurbished
the main structures of the barn and carried out the
necessary alterations where required to adapt for providing
office accommodation, teaching facilities and showroom
areas with a small museum.
The barn required new foundations involving careful
underpinning combined with a specialist shoring system.
This facilitated restoration of large sleeper oak beams
to provide sole plates for the main structure. The project
period was nine months and was completed on time.
The roofing tiles were specially made for the project
from Kentish clay.
The joinery internally was constructed from Oak and
Baltic Pine manufactured to an excellent standard by
Abbott’s joiners at their workshop in Blean.
The project was opened by the Prince of Wales and
is supported by Kent County Council and the majority
of all other conservation organisations throughout Kent. |
