20A & 21 Palace Street, Canterbury
20A and 21 Palace Street is in the middle of Canterbury
City Council’s conservation zone. It is also within
the special interest area for archaeology.
The design of the building was sympathetic with its
surroundings. The design of the original shop front
was replicated in S.T. Abbott’s joinery works
that also made the timber sliding sash windows to conservation
specification. To keep the foundations to a minimum,
a timber frame was used for the building which due to
the restricted area was built on site.
Canterbury is one of the few areas to have used mathematical
tiling. The rear areas of the building were covered
in mathematical tiling materials obtained locally. The
roof was covered in old Kent Peg tiles.
